KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE (K.O.S.)

This term, Monday 28 May – Friday 8 June, Weeks 6 and 7, all of the children will be participating in the Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) health unit. This programme, which has been developed by the New Zealand Police and Ministry of Education, has been designed to provide children with the skills to cope with situations that may involve abuse.

It has three overall aims:

  •       To develop and strengthen skills children need to keep themselves safe;

  •       To support and encourage abused children to get help from caring adults;

  •       To make parents and teachers more aware of the need to keep children from being abused by adults or    older children.

The year 1-3 programme, Knowing What to Do, covers the following topics:

  •         Understanding Feelings – in a range of situations

  •           People You Can Trust – knowing how to get help

The year 4-6 programme, Getting Help, covers the following topics:

  •       Keeping Myself Safe –recognising possible danger and strategies to keep safe
  •       It’s My Right to be Safe – bullying and different types of touch
  •       Acting Responsibly – keeping safe in a variety of situations
  •       Making A Stand – stopping abuse
  •       Getting Help - when in an abusive situation

Your child’s teacher will take the Keeping Ourselves Safe lessons, with help from a police education officer as required.

For the programme to be successful, your help and support is needed. Some Home Book Activities will come home for you to work on with your child. It is important that you participate as much as possible, so that you can reinforce the messages children are getting and help your child use his or her new skills with confidence.

Parents are invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday 9 May at 2.00pm in the staffroom when Senior Constable Adele White will outline the programme and answer any questions.

P.T.A. MEETING – 7.30PM MONDAY 14 MAY

A fresh opportunity for parents to get involved! We require a number of parents who have not previously been involved in the P.T.A. (Parent-Teacher Association) to become involved. Parents who have recently taken a leadership role in this group are needing to relinquish these responsibilities.

The P.T.A. performs very important roles in fund-raising and supporting school events. Without the work of this group of parents, many events that the children really look forward to will not happen.

So – please give careful consideration to becoming involved and come along on Monday 14 May to find out what it is all about.

KEEPFIT KIDS:

There is still room for more children to join this after-school programme.

Contact Chris 533 5224 or 021 269 5023, if you would like to enroll your child.
